What is a good LED matrix for eyes?

There seem to be a number of possibilities, including a matrix with driver board such as Adafruit's charlieplexed matrix (https://learn.adafruit.com/i31fl3731-16x9-charliplexed-pwm-led-driver) which would allow two eyes to be drawn close together, or smaller boards such as https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/11x7-led-matrix-breakout where each eye could be independent, so further apart and non-planar with each other. There is also the FireBeetle series (https://wiki.dfrobot.com/FireBeetle_Covers-24%C3%978_LED_Matrix) which is meant to work with Arduino too, but I have no experience with.
